University Hill Elementary

August 2024

Welcome to the August Construction Update for University Hill Elementary and the playground areas. As we fast approach the return of staff and students, all the projects around the school (except the AV system in the gym) have been completed. Staff and students will return to a school with a significant number of improvements inside and outside—highlights include removal of carpet from the walls in the gym and new paint, repair to outside masonry, new paint and artificial turf on the intermediate playground and drainage improvements at the primary building. 

Below is a short list of activities that will be taking place during the early part of August:

• Final inspections in select areas of work around the school and site

• Final clean in gym

• Demobilization of site fencing and other construction materials

• Installation of AV equipment in gym (September)

We are extremely excited for the changes that have been made here at Uni Hill this summer, and we hope you and your student(s) feel the same way. Thank you for all your patience and support for this project and we look forward to seeing you for the start of the 2024-25 school year!

July 2024

Welcome to the July Construction Update for University Hill Elementary and the playground areas. Several smaller projects are taking place throughout the building this month and you can expect to see an increase in construction related activity both inside and outside the school. The project is currently on schedule, with a completion date slated for early August. Below are highlights of work planned for July:

• Complete rebuild of east stairs

• Complete turf replacement at playground area

• Install new flooring transition strips

• Complete installation of new water pumps

• Complete install of rails, acoustical panels and impact panels at the gym area

We are excited for the many changes that are coming to Uni Hill this summer. As always, none of this would be possible without your support via the 2022 BVSD Bond Program. We appreciate your patience this summer as we work to make Uni Hill the best school possible for your students to learn and grow!

June 2024

Welcome to the June Construction Update for University Hill Elementary School. We want to congratulate you and your student(s) on another successful year at Uni Hill and hope that this message finds your summer off to a great start! As mentioned in the previous “kick-off” letter, construction activity around the school has ramped up considerably since the Memorial Day weekend with a number of trades professionals, making their way around the building and site, completing a plethora of tasks. A reminder that the school will be an active construction site, and as such, will have very limited access to both the schools themselves and the playground areas. Work planned for June is detailed below:

• Begin repairing exterior masonry in selected areas
• Complete work on select areas of the roof, including installing guardrails and downspout extensions
• Begin work on playground areas, including sandblasting existing paint, laying out templates, and repainting existing play areas
• Replace existing sidewalks in selected areas.  
• Remove existing backstops and replace with new soccer goals
• Reseed grass fields
• Remove, regrade, and reinstall existing playground turf
• At the Primary Building: Demo, regrade and replace concrete on the west side.  Demo and replace fencing at the drop-off area
• Replace select doors in main building
• Water pump renewal and replacement
• Main gym: protect floors, remove existing carpet and adhesives and prep for finishes

May 2024

Our $772,000 project will begin immediately after Memorial Day weekend (with some site mobilization taking place in the days leading up to the end of school) and will be substantially complete by early August. Highlights of the project include:

• Gymnasium upgrades, including new acoustical treatment, removal of existing carpet within this space and select finishes improvements

• Replacement of the sound system in the gymnasium

• Sump pump replacement and other select mechanical upgrades

• Removal of the old backstop near the playground

• Repaint playground games

• Miscellaneous site improvements around the school

April 2024

The Contractors are gearing up to start work on the building updates and improvements in our Critical Needs Plan. Construction will begin after the students leave for summer break.

February 2024

The Board approved the GMP Contract in December. Construction is scheduled to commence on June 3, 2024 with a substantial completion date of August 2, 2024.

September 2023

• The project team has been meeting with school staff since last spring to understand the school's needs and develop the design.

• The design is proceeding on schedule and bidding will occur in November/December. 

• Construction for Phase 1 projects will begin in the spring/summer of 2024. 

December 2023

Construction documents have been issued and contract for construction is in process. 

July 2023

• Schematic Design (SD) documents were issued on Jun. 30.

• Meetings with staff to review design will be scheduled upon staff’s return. 

• Design Documents (DD) are scheduled to be issued mid-September with final Construction Documents (CD) scheduled to deliver to BVSD at the end of October.

May 2023

Design for this project will begin this month with a meeting between the architect, project manager and school principal. Design will continue through the summer. Construction documents will be completed this fall with bidding to follow. Construction is anticipated for next spring/summer.
