July 2026

Welcome to the July Construction Update for Southern Hills Middle School! We hope summer is in full swing for you and your family, as it certainly is from our side of the fence, with plenty of work ahead from now to August.  With a good portion of the summer behind us, we are pleased to report that the Southern Hills project is rolling along smoothly as we work toward substantial completion on Aug. 1 in time to welcome staff and students back to the building.  Construction activity planned for the month of July is detailed below:

• Complete fire alarm and intercom upgrade
• Complete flooring in the CTE classrooms 
• Complete remodel of the restrooms - set of two off of the cafeteria, east hallway
• Complete remodel of the woodshop
• New concrete steps in the courtyard completed, paint and installation of new handrails completed by the end of the July

There are exciting changes coming to Southern Hills, and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we work through the end of this summer project. Note that the school, and parts of the grounds, are still an active construction site. Thus, for the safety of everyone, we ask that you avoid coming to the campus unless absolutely necessary. The Boulder Valley School District is extremely grateful for the support given to us by the voters, and we strive to be good stewards in providing the best academic environments possible to support our students. June 2026

Welcome to the June Construction Update for Southern Hills Middle School! With school officially over for the year and students and staff off for a well-earned summer break, construction at Southern Hills is well underway. To allow the contractor to make the most of the summer “down time” the school building, along with select spots around the campus, are closed to anyone besides construction personnel. This will be the case for the duration of the summer. Below is an overview of the construction activities that will be taking place throughout the SHMS campus during the month of June:

• Demo of woodshop, art room and culinary classrooms
• Select abatement (completed in early June)
• Demo of restrooms in the hallway east of the cafeteria
• Begin work on replacement of fire alarm, PA system, and limited sprinkler work.

While the select areas of the surrounding campus are accessible to the public, we ask that you and your students avoid coming to the school building itself unless specifically authorized to do so. Please mind all construction signage when on campus. We are very excited about the changes in store for Southern Hills and sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we work our way through this busy summer of construction. February 2026

We hope this message finds the second semester moving along smoothly for you and your student(s)!  The BVSD Bond team is excited to let you know construction will be starting soon for renovations provided by the Building for Student Success program. These improvements are coming to Southern Hills Middle School thanks to support from the entire BVSD community through passage of the 2022 Bond measure.  

In addition to much-needed repair and upgrades to building systems and finishes, highlights of the improvements coming to Southern Hills include:

• Renovations in Art, Wood Shop and Culinary Arts to expand opportunities for career and technical education 
• Improvements to interior finishes such as painting and ceilings 
• Restroom improvements
• Concrete and paving repair and replacement

The $3.3 million project will begin during spring break in limited areas and will wrap up by the start of school in August. Fairview High School’s project is also beginning and the same construction contractor will be working on both schools. The contractor will mobilize to the Fairview High School site during spring break and will set up two fenced construction areas on the northeast side of the school near the terminus of Knox Dr. Another will be created on the north side of the baseball field. 

Over Spring Break at Southern Hills, asbestos abatement will take place in utility tunnels beneath the school. The abatement work in the school will be conducted by a State licensed contractor in accordance with BVSD and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) regulations and protocols. In addition, the work plan is approved, and a permit issued, by CDPHE. Air monitoring will be conducted to confirm the building is safe to occupy during and after the work. 

Following spring break, work will take place above the ceilings outside of school hours and will not interfere with the school day. Between Mar. 30 and Apr. 17, a concrete pad will be installed on the northeast side of Fairview which will increase construction traffic and activity in the area. Once school is out in May, construction will expand to the entire school site, and there will be no public access to the school or grounds over the summer. 

Student and staff safety is our top priority at Southern Hills Middle School and in the Boulder Valley School District. All workers who are authorized to be on-site will have numbered project stickers on their hard hats and will have background checks. There should be no reason for workers to interact with students or staff while they are in the school.

We want to keep you informed as the project progresses. We will meet weekly with the architect(s) and construction company and will update you regularly about construction progress during the summer months. January 2026

The Board approved the GMP Contract in November.  Construction is scheduled to commence on May 26, 2026 with a substantial completion date of August 1, 2026.

September 2025

The project teams are in the final stages of design for the Phase 3 projects.  Construction documents will be issued in the fall and the contractor’s guaranteed maximum price (GMP) will go to the Board for approval in November.  Construction is expected to kick off in May 2026 after the students leave for summer break.

April 2025

Design meetings with the project team and school staff will continue through the summer. Construction documents will be completed this fall with construction bidding planned for late fall.  Construction for Phase 3 projects will begin in the spring/summer of 2026.

February 2025

Southern Hills Middle School project postcards were sent to neighbors this month. 

January 2025

The project team of MOA Architects and Adolfson & Peterson have been selected for the project. The project team will begin meeting with the Design Advisory Team this month.

November 2024

The project team of MOA Architects and Adolfson & Peterson Construction have been selected for the project. 

September 2024

The Bond project management team will be working with our Procurement staff this fall to contract with architects and general contractors for Phase 3 projects. 

December 2023

The Critical Needs work will be completed in Phase 3, which is scheduled for construction in 2026.  Check back for further information about our project.

January 2023
