UPDATES
May 2025
Welcome to the May Construction Update for Boulder High School! The end of the 2024-25 school year is fast approaching, and we hope that this message finds both you and your family well during this busy time of the school year!
On the construction front, work inside the school has continued throughout the early spring months (primarily in the locker rooms adjacent to the PIT gymnasium) and the transition to full summer construction is underway. Note that this coming summer’s construction activities will be extensive and the main school and campus will be closed to all students and staff as construction activity takes place throughout the school and stadium areas. The only exception to this will be summer wrestling which will take place in the field house on the east side of Recht Field. The rest of the BHS summer sports/activities, including the Summer Learning program, will move to Centennial Middle School. Please stay abreast of the summer schedules for sports and activities on the BHS website and communications from individual coaches and sponsors.
Below is a brief description of the construction activities planned for the month of May:
- Continue to coordinate with BHS administration around construction activities and AP testing sessions for students
- Complete overhead rough-in in locker rooms
- Complete plumbing and electrical overhead rough-in in locker rooms
- Begin block wall installation in the Pit locker rooms
- Begin site preparation and mobilization for full summer construction activity throughout the campus

The 2025 Bond Project for Boulder High School has officially begun, and an extensive amount of work was completed over spring break, specifically abatement in the small gym (the “Pit”) concessions area and extensive masonry repairs in several areas on the exterior of the school. Limited construction will continue in specific areas over the coming weeks before once again ramping up after school is out in May. Below is an overview of the work occurring this month in the women’s and men’s locker rooms adjacent to the Pit:
- Demo of block wall for construction access
- Underground pipe replacement
- Backfill, compaction and pourback of floors
- Leveling and grinding of floors
- Begin HVAC work
- Begin rough-in of sprinkler system, electrical and plumbing systems in the ceiling area
Our contractor, JHL Constructors, has done an excellent job of minimizing disruptions while engaging in their work in this area of the building. Students and staff should not be impacted by this work, and we expect this to be the case through the remainder of the school year. As always, we are extremely grateful for your support of this project and will continue to keep you informed in the months ahead……Go Panthers!

- One of the critical needs for BHS was to repair & replace pavement where needed. Our team has determined that due to the additional work we were able to complete in the last bond that we have opportunities to focus on other critical needs here as the parking lot was replaced at the completion of the last project at this school. We are looking at expanding the extent of field improvements, assessing the roof for possible replacement and improving more of the building envelope.
- Schematic Design (SD) documents are anticipated on July 28th.
- Meetings with staff to review design will be scheduled upon staff’s return.
- Design Documents (DD) are scheduled to be issued mid-September with final Construction Documents (CD) scheduled to deliver to BVSD at the end of October.

Construction activity is in full swing on Recht Field and the main access bridge to the Recht Field complex! The old synthetic turf, along with the old infill, have been removed and repairs and improvements have been completed on the base of the field. The new base, turf, and infill have been installed, as well as new BVSD logos. The new infill material, which is installed at the base of the “grass” tufts to help them stand up, is made of crushed olive pits. This 100% natural, sustainable material will be used for all the turf replacement projects planned through the Bond program.
The old deck timbers have been removed from the access bridge over Boulder Creek. The new ones have been fabricated, treated and will be installed this month, following the replacement of the steel timber supports.
The entire complex is scheduled to be completed and reopened to the community by early August. Note: The entire Recht Field complex and the access bridge will be closed to the public, including on the weekends, until the project is complete.

The work to replace the turf at Recht Field and refurbish the main access bridge to the Recht Field complex has officially begun! These two projects are part of a larger scope of work that is planned for Boulder High School as a part of the 2022 Bond Project approved by voters in November 2022. This work is occurring now because of the deteriorated condition of both the bridge and the turf.
