November 2019 Updates/DispForm.aspx?ID=26 Updates/DispForm.aspx?ID=26{28e838a4-8015-4177-ac17-2576b5d1e514}November 2019Late last month, the final few Bond construction tasks were completed at Mesa. The final area of the playground is open with new rubberized surface and play equipment and the kids love it! Installation and fine-tuning of three new mechanical units are complete. The units are providing heat now and will be ready with air conditioning next spring. Now that students and staff have been in the building for a couple of months, we can see what a difference the renovation work makes. The new maker space in the library is up and running and is very popular with students and teachers. We now have a space that supports the “design thinking” our students have used for years with coding, robotics, and other "trial and error" learning. A few different modifications in the 4th and 5th-grade open space classrooms really create a different experience in these spaces. Lower ceilings and hard walls reduce unwanted sound and help to define each class’s space, creating a strong sense of ownership for the students. In addition, new LED lighting coupled with ceiling modifications that help to disperse daylight from the high clerestory windows brighten up the spaces dramatically. The audio enhancement system that was installed in all classrooms and learning spaces help students and teachers hear each other better. And of course, new carpet and paint throughout the building have refreshed and brightened our school environment. Other important work that we can’t see such as roof repair and mechanical and electrical systems upgrades have extended the life of our building for many years. This is just a brief snapshot of the extensive work done at the school. We are deeply grateful for the investment of Boulder Valley taxpayers in our building and our students.

While construction will be substantially complete and the building will be safe, comfortable, and ready for students on the first day of school, there will still be some ongoing work, which will take place in evenings and weekends outside of school hours. As such, you may notice some areas that don’t look quite finished. Please continue to be patient and understanding as the team works to wrap up the project.

Crews have completed the wall framing and electrical rough-ins and now are starting to hang drywall on the ceiling and walls. In the coming week, they will have walls painted and flooring installed. This summer, they will expand their construction scope to include the building and the exterior site work (see link at bottom of the page for a summary of the construction scope). Monthly communications will be provided over the summer. We want to thank you for your patience and understanding with the preliminary construction work, and we look forward to a newly renovated school in the fall. Just a reminder, the school building and grounds will be closed for the summer. Mesa administrative staff will move to Creekside Elementary during construction.,

For the month of June, interior construction will be focused on asbestos abatement, demolition of some existing bathrooms, and the HVAC system. Prior to the end of school, electrical crews worked evening inside the building to get a head start on summer work. After demolition, crews will begin roughing-in the new HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. Outside on top of the building, crews will prepare for new mechanical HVAC units and take care of some minor roof replacement. On the playgrounds, crews are at work removing pea gravel and regrading the area to prepare for a new foundation and rubberized play surface. Some of the existing equipment will be reinstalled as well as some new pieces. Construction of a new preschool playground is underway. Just a reminder that the entire school site is closed for construction until early August.

July 2019 Updates/DispForm.aspx?ID=24 Updates/DispForm.aspx?ID=24{28e838a4-8015-4177-ac17-2576b5d1e514}July 2019Mesa Elementary is a busy place these days! With asbestos abatement complete, construction activity is happening in nearly every area of the school. Turner Construction has made great progress this summer and crews are working double shifts to complete work and get ready for the start of school in August. In the open-space classrooms, new ductwork for heating and air conditioning is being installed, some hard walls have been constructed, and ceiling modifications are underway. The hard walls will help with sound mitigation and the ceiling modifications are intended to distribute natural daylight from the clerestory windows more broadly. Renovations of classrooms for preschool, including construction of restrooms, is underway. Throughout the school, restrooms are being renovated to improve aesthetics and ADA accessibility. With a large amount of work occurring above the ceiling, ladders are ubiquitous through the corridors. New wiring and fiber optic cable will support audio enhancement in classrooms, fire safety system upgrades, communications system improvements, and more. In the kitchen, crews are working on moving underground plumbing to accommodate a new floor plan and new equipment. Outside, there is a new preschool playground and foundations are being constructed for new rubberized surfaces for the other equipment zones. Roof repair is in progress and new windows and doors are staged for installation. In the coming weeks, work will move into the final stages, including testing of systems, installing finishes such as carpet and paint, and installing furniture. Students and staff can look forward to returning to exciting new changes in August!

After all books and materials were packed last weekend, they began renovations to create the new makerspace area of the library. Construction crews will be working from 3:30 p.m. to 12 a.m. Monday through Friday. Work in the library over the next few weeks will include removing windows (for later reuse) and beginning ceiling and wall demolition. Once complete, they will begin framing walls, start electrical rough-ins and re-install the salvaged windows. Additional demolition work will begin in the boiler room when the weather is warm enough to shut down the boiler system. We appreciate the opportunity to begin the construction work early to help meet completion dates in August.,
